Starting Salary: Biweekly $1976 (Approx. Monthly $4,283). After Six Months $2,076 (Approx. Monthly $4,498). Annual Merit Increases to $2180 - $2288 - $2403 (Biweekly); $4283 - 4498 -$4273 - $4959 - $5206 (Approx. Monthly)

DESCRIPTION:
Deputy Director of Transportation will plan, coordinate, supervise, and otherwise, manage/administer the financial elements, staff, projects, and activities of the Land Improvement, Airports, and County Surveyor Divisions of the County Department of Transportation. This work consists of complex and responsible professional engineering, surveying, administrative and management duties within a major County department. Carries out and otherwise provides for the County Engineer-Surveyor and/or County Road Commissioner functions assigned and acting under the authority of the Director. Supervises the issuance of encroachment and transportation permits. At the Director's request/direction, represents the department at the Planning Commission, the Board of Supervisors and other official County meetings on behalf of the department. Attends special meetings and public gatherings as the department's representative. Provides liaison to various State, County, City and local Districts. Coordinates with Assistant Director for the use of Engineering personnel to assist with the activities of the Land Improvement, Airports, and County Surveyor Divisions. Annually, prepares program budgets for land Improvement, Airports and County Surveyor Divisions. Assumes Acting Director responsibilities in the absence of the Director and Assistant Director. Assists the Director in development, implementation, and achievement of Departmental policies, goals and objectives. Performs other related duties as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Knowledge of land surveying principles and practices; of civil engineering principles and practices as applied to the field of public works, particularly the planning, design, and construction of roads and bridges; of various methods of preparing plans, specifications, estimates, and technical reports pertinent to public works projects and programs; of modern methods and techniques in the design, construction, and maintenance of public works facilities; and, of modern public administration and management principles as applied to public works activities. Ability to communicate effectively in presenting complex information orally and in writing' to plan, coordinate, and supervise engineering and road construction projects, and to supervise others; to analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action; to prepare and administer transportation program budgets; to prepare clear and concise reports, plans, and sketches; to conduct public meetings; to plan coordinate, and supervise the work of professional and technical personnel; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies, private consultants and other individuals. Requires possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the State of California, possession of a valid license as a Professional Land Surveyor issued the State of California; and eight years of increasingly responsible experience in the planning, design, and construction of public works facilities and Land Improvement activities, including at least one year of administrative and supervisory duties at a management level.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: All completed applications will be reviewed. Dependent upon the number of qualified candidates the examination may consist of an oral appraisal panel (interview), weighted 100; or an unassembled examination consisting of an evaluation of education and experience on the written application.
