DESCRIPTION: Professional level planning position that will help write text amendments for City of Ocala Comprehensive Plan based on the Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR); revise the Land Development Regulations; and work with the City's Sustainable Community Program. Responsibilities will also include providing staff assistance to City boards; carrying out research projects; and conducting independent studies. The City of Ocala, Florida (population 45,585) is located 75 miles north of Orlando in Central Florida. Ocala is particularly attractive to those seeking an outstanding physical environment, reasonable housing costs, and a vibrant economy. In fact, Money Magazine named the area the nation's fifth most desirable place to live in 1995. The Planning Department, which consists of 11 staff members, is located in the beautiful Ocala Historic District in downtown Ocala. Recent planning projects include: an evaluation of the City's Comprehensive Plan; the adoption of a Transportation Concurrency Exception Area; continued participation in Florida's Sustainable Communities Program; the revitalization of the downtown area and square; the rehabilitation of Ocala's historic Union Train Station; and the establishment of a public transit system.Minimum requirements are: A Master's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration or Geography plus two years of experience in public or private planning or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Qualified candidates must have strong research, analytical, writing and presentation skills. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public planning and the ability to discuss planning issues and decisions to citizen boards and elected officials are essential.
