DESCRIPTION: Must be able to
perform complex professional and administrative work overseeing the Field
Operations and Utilities divisions of the Public Works and Utilities Department.
The functions of these divisions include: street and storm drainage construction
and maintenance; landscape maintenance activities; cemetery operation and
maintenance; water distribution and sewer collection construction and
maintenance; traffic signals; and pavement markings operations and maintenance;
water treatment and supply; wastewater treatment and collection; water and
wastewater system facility maintenance operations; water meter service and
repair and facility maintenance systems; SCADA systems for water and wastewater
treatment; and service requests for water and sewer service. Must possess a
Professional Engineering registration in the State of North Carolina or the
ability to earn one within 6 months of employment.
Qualifications: Desirable education: Any combination of education and experience
equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a
bachelor of science degree in civil engineering or related field, preferably
supplemented by a master�s degree in engineering administration or public
administration and extensive professional, progressive experience in the
administration of a public works and utilities system operation in a growing
community.
Community: Gastonia is in Gaston County and is the second largest city in the
Charlotte, Gastonia, Rock Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which has a
population of approximately 1.4 million. Gastonia is located 22 miles west of
Charlotte on I-85. As one of the key cities in the MSA, Gastonia has experienced
steady growth with a population change during the 1990s of more than +10%. The
city covers an area of slightly more than 49 square miles and the current
population is more than 70,000. Originally a textile community, Gastonia�s
economic base has diversified and grown to include a broad base of industrial,
manufacturing, office and commercial interests.
