DESCRIPTION: Evanston, IL (75,000) Dynamic, highly desirable, lakefront community immediately north of Chicago seeks experienced, proven, progressive candidates to lead its Community Development Department comprised of 45 FTEs and responsible for a $3.5 million budget. Evanston is home to Northwestern University and is an ethnically, racially and economically diverse community located along Chicago’s north shore of Lake Michigan. An historically significant community, Evanston is a city of neighborhoods with a vibrant downtown, thriving commercial districts, and beautiful tree lined streets. Position is appointed by the City Manager and reports to the Assistant City Manager. Qualified individuals will be expected to have a strong background in urban planning, economic development, building and zoning, historic preservation, code enforcement, and administrative leadership with a minimum of five to ten years experience in an upper management position in a community of comparable size and complexity. Requires Master’s degree in urban planning, public administration, architecture or related field. Candidates should possess strong skills and/or experience in leadership, collaborative relationships with Boards and Commissions and community organizations, public/private partnerships, effective service delivery, creative problem solving and communication/interpersonal skills needed with a team-management orientation.
